• Other Pets and Grief

  • Other pets in the household can feel grief at the passing of a companion, even one that they didn’t get along with in life. Their grief is real and it can last as long as a person’s grief. We encourage allowing the other pets in the household to be present during euthanasia if they are not disruptive. It is important to let them to inspect the body after death, because it can help them to understand and accept what has happened. In some cases, if this is not allowed, the other pet(s) in a household have been known to spend days, weeks, or months searching for their missing companion. Pets understand death and allowing them to know what has happened helps them find closure.
